A Series Signage Wins an Interiors + Sources Product Innovation Award

Representing the very finest innovative commercial products

Honoring outstanding commercial solutions that balance beauty and functionality, the Interiors + Sources (i+s) Product Innovation Awards (PIAs) are guided by the magazine mission to “design with purpose,” and the A Series Illuminated Signage certainly embodies this ethos.

A specifier’s favorite, the sleek, ADA compliant, and elegantly diffused illuminated room sign offers complete customization including the choice of orientation, text alignment and faceplate color.

Featuring a thin design with only a 1/2-inch depth, the surface-mount sign can be mounted in either Landscape or Portrait orientation and text alignment can be positioned in any of the four upper/lower corners. Elegantly illuminated through a clear, diffused lens, the standard faceplate color is black, but specifiers can choose any custom color (RAL) to compliant their project’s décor.

The sign’s modular design features an integrated driver – versus remote – allowing for straight-forward installation and simplified serviceability, saving time and money.

Judged by an esteemed and experienced panel of judges from the interior design community, the i+s PIAs celebrate unique solutions to help its readers of interior designers, architects, and product specification influencers to create beautiful, functional and high-performance commercial projects.

A Place to Flourish

The Bowery Mission, an organization transforming lives

Based in New York City on the Lower East Side, The Bowery Mission is one of the most historic and dedicated non-profit organizations, serving and helping those facing homelessness, hunger, and other hardships for over 150 years.

With the doors open 365 days a year, The Bowery Mission services 1,000 to 1,200 people a day, providing food, clothing, counseling, shelter, and a tranquil place for its clients. Last year alone the organization provided over 320,000 meals, 66,000 nights of sleep, 45,000 showers, and 32,000 articles of clothing while treating every person who steps through its door like family.

George Oliphant, host of NBC’s home renovation show “George to the Rescue,” recently surprised the center with a well-deserved renovation. Working alongside general contractor SilverLining, Inc., Robert A.M. Stern Architects, LLP, Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design, and generous contributors including DMF Lighting, the team transformed the building’s life-changing career center, along with a lounge area, into comfortable and rejuvenating spaces with next-level amenities for its hardworking volunteers, staff and clients.

DMF was proud to donate its M Series recessed downlight and wall washers to assist with the renovation.

TM-30

See the TM-30 Reports for our products below

What is TM-30?

TM-30, developed in 2015 by the Illumination Engineering Society (IES), is an advanced method for measuring the color rendering capabilities of light sources. It addresses the limitations of the older Color Rendering Index (CRI) by providing a more comprehensive and accurate evaluation of how well a light source renders colors.

TM-30 is particularly beneficial in environments where precise color rendering is essential. It allows designers and lighting professionals to make more informed decisions, ensuring that the chosen lighting enhances the desired colors and ambiance of the space.

IES Progress Report 2024

X Series 2-inch Downlights Recognized for Technical Achievement

Showcasing products that provide significant technical advancement in the art and science of lighting, the X Series Modular Downlighting System has been accepted into the 2024 Illuminating Engineering Society’s (IES) Progress Report for its uniqueness, innovation, and significance to the lighting industry.

The X Series 2-inch downlight’s modular design (housing, module, and trim) features the industry’s first LED light engine module integrated with a DALI-2 driver for the rapidly growing Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) lighting control protocol.

A DALI Config App allows simple DALI setup and reading without power and stores original settings for device upgrades, changes, or replacement using NFC cloning.

The downlights’ cleverly engineered Cross Beam Total Internal Reflection (TIR) Optics maximize light efficacy (up to 105 lm/W) while minimizing glare and ensuring no cutoff when combined with a pinhole trim. To learn more about the benefits of the optics, watch the video below.

The versatility of the modular design includes tool-less, field-interchangeable optics, modules, and trims, allowing for simple serviceability, easy design changes, and onsite flexibility to meet specific application needs. The X Series is also the first truly serviceable 2-inch downlight with integrated drivers in the modules versus the housing, so modules, equipped with quick connects, can be easily swapped out with below ceiling access.

The yearly mission of the IES Progress Committee is to keep in touch with developments in the art and science of lighting throughout the world and prepare a yearly report of achievements for the Society.

Technical Bulletin: Splash Zone Safe

Lighting the Way to the Splash Zone: Understanding ANSI/NSF 2 Standard

As industry professionals—lighting designers, architects, or others involved in the commercial and industrial lighting industry—we are continually faced with a myriad of standards and regulations. Among these, the National Sanitation Foundation’s (NSF) “splash zone” standardization is one way to evaluate implications on lighting design and application in food-related environments. DMF Lighting, in its commitment to quality and safety, has met ANSI/NSF 2 standard suitable for splash zone use with modules, trims, and cylinder extrusions in the matte white or matte black finish across all product series.

The Importance of Splash Zone Standards

Why should the lighting industry concern itself with a standard seemingly geared towards food equipment? The answer is simple—our products are pervasive, illuminating environments from offices to industrial plants and, importantly, food processing areas. In these settings, luminaire lenses and trims are potentially exposed to the same environment as food processing equipment, making ANSI/NSF 2 standards relevant to our industry. ANSI/NSF 2 splash zone standards underscore a luminaire’s capability to withstand and function optimally under specific conditions. Earning this certification also highlights a product’s adherence to stringent quality and safety criteria, providing reassurance to clients that the lighting equipment can sustain sanitary conditions vital in areas like commercial kitchens, food processing plants, and other similar environments.

Measuring up to the Standard

The process of obtaining ANSI/NSF 2 listing for splash zone use is comprehensive and rigorous. It involves several stages including product testing, material analyses, plant audits, and product-system conformity assessments. The testing phase ensures that the product surfaces can endure high-humidity environments and frequent washing without compromising its performance or the safety of the environment. The materials used are scrutinized for their resistance to corrosion and their ability to prevent microbial growth.

For luminaires, the standards specifically assess only those elements exposed below the ceiling – the lens design, durability, ingress protection ratings, and fixture construction. The fixtures should be designed such that they do not accumulate dust, dirt, or food particles. The lenses should be shatter-resistant to prevent contamination risks in case of breakage. These measures ensure the luminaire is easy to clean, minimizes bacterial growth, and can withstand routine cleaning without functional degradation.

Conclusion

In summary, while the notion of “splash zones” may seem quite specific to food equipment, its implications significantly influence the lighting industry. Our understanding and adherence to these standards not only foster the development of safer, higher quality products but also elevate the standards of the environments our products illuminate.

At DMF, we are the guiding light, illuminating the path for our clients in a manner that is efficient, sustainable, and safe. The ANSI/NSF 2 Standard, with its specific provisions for splash zones, helps ensure we stay true to this objective, shaping our creations to meet not just the lighting needs, but also the hygiene and safety demands of the spaces we enhance.
