Fenwick San Francisco Office

Fenwick’s 41,500-square-foot San Francisco office spans three connected floors with vastly different lighting environments, ranging from a sunlit, bay-facing curtain wall to deep interior corridors, open desking, and dedicated lounge areas. Designed by Studio Blitz, the project required a single lighting system capable of establishing a unified luminous quality across reception, the work café, specialty bars, and boardroom suites, regardless of daylight conditions or structural variations.

To solve this across scale, DMF Lighting’s M Series platform served as the architectural foundation. Rather than specifying different fixture solutions for each distinct zone, the design team deployed more than 250 M Series 4″ new-construction downlights across both floors. Recessed into the flat ceiling planes, the M Series delivers a continuous, controlled wash of ambient light. This creates a consistent luminous plane that balances natural daylight while seamlessly connecting deep interior paths to the perimeter glass.

By standardizing on one versatile DMF family, the space achieves strict color consistency and precise beam delivery throughout every layout transition. The M Series integrates quietly into the architecture, maintaining high lighting performance across open offices and high-traffic corridors while providing the clean baseline necessary for custom decorative pendants and accent coves to stand out.

The high fixture count also presents an operational consideration: three continuously staffed floors cannot simply go dark for routine maintenance. DMF’s modular, field-serviceable architecture allows drivers or light engines to be replaced entirely from below the ceiling, fixture by fixture, without disturbing ceiling tiles or scheduling facility downtime around the firm’s operating hours. The same modular construction that creates a unified ceiling plane on day one keeps the system easily serviceable for years to come.
