Bespoke Integration: Bridging the Gap Between High-Performance Lighting and CLT Architecture

Location: Kearney, NE

Products:  M Series, M Series Cylinder

Lighting Designer: Buro Happold

Architect: BVH Architecture

The Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA), housed in a historic 1911 Post Office, recently underwent a massive $36.5 million transformation. The project, led by BVH Architecture and Buro Happold, involved renovating the original neoclassical structure and adding a 23,000-square-foot contemporary expansion.

The lighting challenge was twofold: the design needed to respect the historic fabric of the building while providing extreme flexibility for “The Link”—a central circulation space featuring a complex, origami-inspired mass timber ceiling. This architectural highlight, referencing Nebraska’s migratory cranes, required a lighting solution that could disappear into the structure without bulky hardware.

M Series Cylinder

In order to address the challenge of seamlessly integrating into the CLT ceiling, the engineers at DMF Lighting worked with the team at Buro Happod to craft a customized design for the circulation space pendants. To maintain the “quiet ceiling” aesthetic, the stems were engineered to disappear seamlessly into the cross laminated timber beams without the use of standard canopy plates. This collaboration resulted in a delicate, almost candlelit effect that enhances the warmth of the wood and creates a “lantern-like” beacon visible from the street.

Read the full feature here

The M Series Cylinder (4″ extrusion) was the ideal solution for this type of complex solution.  Because all driver and electrical components are seamlessly built within the cylinder extrusion, the design team was able to eliminate the need for external hardware and deep canopies. This specific engineering allowed for the “quiet” ceiling effect seen in the project’s technical details, ensuring the fixtures emerged from the wood beams without unnecessary clutter.

Additionally, the LED light modules used within the pendants match those used in adjacent downlights in the space, allowing for aesthetic consistency throughout the circulation spaces.  This uniformity ensures  a cohesive experience for visitors as they move through the historic and modern wings of the museum.

M Series

The M Series adjustable downlights with flangeless trims complemented this custom pendant installation.  By opting for a flangeless finish, the downlights integrate seamlessly into the ceiling plane, echoing the “quiet” and uncluttered look achieved by the pendant stems in the CLT beams.

Beyond the shared aesthetic, the technical integration of these systems provides a superior level of control. Because the LED light modules used within the adjustable downlights are identical to those in the M Series Cylinder Pendants, the entire space benefits from a unified dimming curve and identical optical precision.

About Buro Happold

Buro Happold is an international, integrated consultancy of engineers, consultants, and advisers with a reputation for delivering creative, value-led solutions for an ever-changing world. The firm’s specialized lighting design team focuses on the intersection of art and science, ensuring that lighting is not just functional but transformative to the architectural experience. For the MONA expansion, Buro Happold’s New York office collaborated closely with DMF Lighting to develop customized mounting solutions that maintained the “quiet ceiling” aesthetic. By specifying systems with unified dimming curves and matching optical modules, they ensured a high-performance environment where technical precision meets artistic elegance.

Quinn Emanual Urquhart & Sullivan LLP – NYC Office

The New Look of Law: A Textile Showroom transforms to a collaborative work space

Location: New York, NY

Products: X Series, X Series Cylinder, M Series, M Series Cylinder

Lighting Designer:  The SEED

Architect: STUDIOS

Photography Credit: David Mitchell

This Fifth Avenue  office demanded a nuanced lighting strategy that could simultaneously support high-stakes litigation and embody the firm’s modern, “Substance Over Appearances” culture. The resulting design solution prioritized seamless architectural integration to maintain the building’s raw, historic character. This goal was achieved through a highly layered lighting approach: Flangeless downlights were utilized extensively to achieve a virtually invisible light source, preserving the clean aesthetic of the ceilings and walls. For enhanced flexibility and focused illumination in collaboration zones and high-task areas, the design incorporated both double head housings and cylinders. This variety of solutions provides the necessary high-performance illumination for intense work while offering the ability to direct and focus light, thereby enhancing the layered atmosphere and the richness of the interior materials. The result is a sophisticated environment where the lighting is essential to the architecture, creating a warm, comfortable space that remains functional and visually uncluttered—a true reflection of a cutting-edge law firm.

X Series Cylinder & M Series Cylinder

Utilizing a suite of customizable features, DMF cylinders offer both brilliant illumination and sophisticated design versatility. The M Series Cylinder (4″ extrusion) and the X Series Cylinder (3″ extrusion) showcase advanced engineering with all driver and electrical components seamlessly built within the cylinder extrusion, ensuring no external hardware, deep canopys, or ceiling clutter. These high-performing LED modules are designed for ultimate adaptability, featuring trim options, uplight capability, and robust housings for indoor, outdoor, and wet locations. Further expanding their utility, DMF cylinders provide a vast array of mounting styles, including wall, surface, stem, and cord mounts, delivering a comprehensive lighting solution tailored for any project need.

X Series

The X Series is DMF’s two-inch high-performance product line, delivering between 750 and 1500 lumens. This smaller aperture system was ideally suited for this project where a minimal visual footprint was critical to preserving the integrity of the architecturally rich interiors and the extensive wood ceilings. To ensure the clean, seamless aesthetic expected, the drivers are embedded within the light engine (as opposed to the housing) for below the ceiling accessibility. Furthermore, the X Series housings feature a unique trap door that provides crucial post-install access to the splice box from below the ceiling plane—a feature vital for simplified serviceability in challenging, non-accessible materials like the finished wood used throughout the project. The X Series offering includes both downlight and adjustable modules, allowing for uncompromised performance, seamless finishes, and unmatched ease of serviceability.

M Series

The M Series  is  DMF’s most versatile product offering as exemplified in the double housing installation throughout this application.  Centered around a compact, four-inch, plug-and-play LED module with an embedded driver, the M Series delivers the optimal balance of form and function. Paired with one of the award-winning M Series Housings, you can achieve fire, sound, wet location, and other ratings required for the most demanding projects.  The M Series, true to all DMF offerings, provides outstanding illumination and color consistency while being simple to specify, install, and maintain.

DMF Design Awards 2025, 1st Place – Goldfinch Residence

A modern residence designed to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living, offering stunning canyon views and a deep connection to nature.

Location: San Diego, CA

Products: M Series Residential

Owner, Architect, Developer: Matthew Segal

Construction Consultant: Pogo Dog

Electrical Contractor: Huey Electric

Photography Credit: Matthew Segal

This 3,600-square-foot cast-in-place concrete home was designed and built by the architect for his family on a 40-foot vertical slope, requiring innovative planning and engineering. Each level integrates outdoor volumes with picture-frame-like edges, allowing occupants to enjoy the canyon’s sounds, smells, and beauty as if choreographed. The architect specifically chose DMF Lighting for its technical ease of installation in cast-in-place concrete and the ability to quickly swap trims, color temperatures, and lenses. This flexibility enabled efficient and precise tuning of the home’s lighting. Given the exposed concrete, the architect had only one chance to locate the lighting, and DMF’s directional LEDs allowed for adaptation to layouts that may not have been originally planned.

M Series Residential

The M Series Residential family is part of DMF’s most versatile, M Series product offering. Centered around a compact, four-inch, plug-and-play LED module with an embedded driver the M Series delivers the optimal balance of form and function.
