Traditional commercial housings use a big, heavy black box to control light leaks. Measuring as much as 19″ long and 7″ tall, the bulky housings severely limit spacing options for lighting layouts and designs. Heavy boxes are also more costly to ship and more cumbersome during installation.

DMF Lighting revolutionized the commercial industry by decreasing the size and weight of the housing, allowing for more lighting layout options while also making it easier to install.

Smaller is better

Instead of a large box over the entire housing, the Adjustable DCD4 features a module mounted light shield to eliminate light leak. Far smaller and far lighter, the cold-fused shield takes up a fraction of the volume of a traditional can. The smaller size makes it more manageable to handle during installation. The lighter weight means reduced risk of sag.

The smaller size makes installation easier and helps prevent fixture movement below the ceiling.

Sturdy as ever

The DCD Series Housing is not only small, but strong as well. A stable housing makes sure adjustable module movements stay perfect. Specially-engineered, galvanized-steel bar hangers ensure the complete luminaire acts as a perfect single unit.

With a smaller housing that doesn’t sacrifice performance, the DCD Housings install quickly and ensure the aim stays steady.

DMF understands that conditions on a project can change.

A new paint color or material can have drastic effects on your lighting. So if you can’t decide on color temperature or illumination is not as expected, now you don’t have to worry. The DCD Series provides easily configurable, robust lighting capabilities, giving you the flexibility you need for ever changing lighting plans.

One housing, many choices

The key innovation for the DCD Series is its modularity. A single DCD housing can tackle your whole project with a wide range of options that you can change without the need for above ceiling access.

Start with the housing. Later, you can decide on the type of lighting, beam angle, lumen output, color temperature and more. Then should plans change, you can easily swap optics or add specialty lens options without touching the housing.

Need even more radical lighting changes? Alter color temperatures, lumen output or switch between downlight or adjustable using the same housing even after the ceiling is installed. The DCD Series makes it all simple with precision-crafted, inter-operable components.

“We have a single housing that works with any type of application you want, and if you change your mind later on, our product can support it.”

The DCD Series is flexible enough to illuminate your whole project with a broad range of light and aesthetics options, all with just one housing. Pair your light with a beautifully finished trim and create exactly the results you’re looking for.

The Future of Downlighting

The DCD Series is a higher-lumen, interoperable downlighting solution that radically simplifies configuration in the field, bringing together robust lighting capability and a highly modular system. It’s a revolutionary new downlight that provides superior lighting quality, more control, and more options.

Honoring the most innovative LED and solid-state luminaires and fixtures on the market, the Product Innovation Awards (PIA) is an annual accolade presented by Architectural SSL. And for the second consecutive year, two different DMF products were awarded, this year being the SquareFrame System LED Downlight and DRD5S Surface Mount LED Area Light.

Product Innovation Awards

The Architectural SSL Product Innovation Awards reveal the criteria and characteristics of the technology that matters. One of the barriers hindering adoption of LED products is an uncertainty about the quality of products. Ultimately, the award winners represent a peer-recognized selection of quality products that the architectural and lighting design community can feel comfortable specifying.

SquareFrame System

The SquareFrame is a breakthrough addition to the DMF downlighting family. It takes the OneFrame’s exceptional flexibility, simplicity and performance and reimagines it in a square format that delivers perfect alignment.

DRD5S Surface Mount LED Area Light

With its ultra-thin profile and minimalist design, the original DRD5S redefined what’s possible for a surface mount downlight. The two new DRD5S Area Lights builds on that, incorporating all of the technical breakthroughs of the originals into a larger 8″ Round or 18″ Linear format.

What do water and electricity have in common? Absolutely nothing. They don’t mix. Well, they can mix, but it’s not pretty. Obviously, exposing electricity to liquids can pose a hazard. So it’s important that spaces with the potential to contain water or high humidity utilize lights with the proper UL moisture protection rating.

Why do these ratings matter?

UL, Underwriters Laboratory, defines three types of moisture protection ratings: Dry, Damp, and Wet Location. These ratings distinguish the proper lighting fixtures for different environments. We want to be able to preserve the light bulb and its longevity. That’s why it’s important that fixtures installed in high moisture areas are Wet Location rated, preventing the accumulation of water inside the electrical parts.

UL administers several safety tests using products from different companies in order to evaluate how they match up to their safety standards. Before submitting products to UL for testing, DMF conducts our own set of rigorous examinations. Our engineers even test beyond the standards outlined by UL, allowing water to pool on the surface of the fixture. So we understand the importance of wet location ratings and commit to providing safety and peace of mind.

Engineered to Stay Dry

DMF’s Twist & Lock mechanism is crucial to achieving a Wet Location Rating. Our standard LED modules combine with any Twist & Lock Trim to create a moisture tight seal without the need of additional accessories, unsightly specialty trims or unique installations. Not only that, our products don’t utilize waterproof seals to protect their internal components from moisture. That’s how precise and tight the fit is between our trims and the module and with the ceiling.

“As soon as you twist and lock a trim,
our module becomes Wet Location Rated.”

Wet Location Standard

DMF prides itself on designing LED downlights that are easy to specify and install. That’s why we do not offer any products that require dry locations. All standard downlights feature a Wet Location Rating while adjustables and cylinders feature either Damp Location rated or offer Wet Location as an option.

Choosing the Right Downlight

With so many downlights and cylinders offering wet location as standard, DMF has simplified the specification process. Use any of our standard recessed downlights, whether general, Apex Series, or even wall wash, for any wet location application. The DRD5S Surface Mounts also feature wet location as standard, simply requiring the addition of caulking between the ceiling and module.

The only non-wet location rated DMF LED Modules are the adjustables, which like all aimable downlights, feature moving components that exclude them from being wet rated. However, all DMF adjustables are damp location rated and approved for use over sinks and in covered patios.

Moisture Protection Ratings – LED Modules

Note: Twist & Lock Trim required

Wet rated outdoor areas like open patios can be lit with our cylinders, which offer wet location rating as standard or optional depending on the mounting type.

Moisture Protection Ratings – LED Cylinders

All these options allow customers to confidently specify most DMF downlights in any area of their home, regardless of moisture concerns, saving both money and the potential of future headaches.

DMF’s engineers understand how challenging it can be to install a square downlight perfectly straight and perfectly aligned. That’s why they’ve incorporated features that seamlessly work together to give a flawless fit more quickly and with less hassle.

Go anywhere design

At less than 5% the size of a 12″ x 16″ housing, the SquareFrame is drastically smaller than the competition and can install into the most physically restrictive environments. The SquareFrame’s low profile allows it to fit in as little as 4″ of ceiling space while its bar hangers adjust to install into wood joists spaced 8″ to 24″ apart.

When perfection matters

Up and down, side to side, 90 degrees of rotation, lateral translation. The SquareFrame does it all to make precise square alignments simpler and faster. Full rotation and side-to-side translation make getting the right placement a snap while tool-free height adjustment keeps the housing flush with the ceiling plane.

In addition, the housing features indents on all sides for fixture-to-fixture laser or string alignment. Our engineers even designed a 2 degree built-in play on the trims so you can set the exact final angle.

“Square downlighting is always a hard thing to accomplish because there are so many straight lines. You have to line up every trim exactly to the one next to it. And to get that done, you need to have something that can be adjusted in any direction.”

–  Vince, Mechanical Engineer

Lock it in

Once you’ve properly positioned the SquareFrame, locking it in place couldn’t be any easier. The bar hanger lengths lock by simply tightening a screw and then deforming the holder. Similarly, you can set the junction box rotational position by just tightening two screws. And if for any reason you need to return to the original factory position, SquareFrame includes a set pin for effortless resets.

At DMF, we’re constantly following the industry and listening to consumers to learn more. The SquareFrame represents a culmination of that research, filling in a market need for simple, intuitive square downlighting.

The DRD5S Surface Mount LED Series is defined by its minimal, modern design. Even with four different shapes and sizes, the downlight is instantly recognizable by its slim, nearly frame-less profile.

Thin is in

Manufacturing and design are inseparable. The DRD5S utilizes precision machined die-cast aluminum for a thin, lightweight, yet sturdy molding. We experimented with different lens materials and thicknesses to get it as close to the LED board as possible. A single millimeter closer and the LEDs would become visible. This meticulous attention to detail is what created the thinnest surface mount LED in its class at just over half an inch in depth.

“What people expect from their light is always changing. At DMF we do the research, we stay on top of technology, and we understand what people want. Then we deliver on all those goals.”

–  Vince, Mechanical Engineer

Edge to edge

Traditionally, surface mount LEDs feature robust trims to dissipate heat from the edge-lit LED optics. But we looked to redefine what a surface mount downlight looks like. By utilizing an LED board and innovative heatsink, we’ve nearly eliminated the flange all together. The unibody construction and snap-in lens eliminates any visible hardware or seams for a sleek, unified appearance. The lens practically blends into the body so the DRD5S can disappear into the ceiling.

See the light, not the fixture

The die-cast aluminum body and thin flange make the DRD5S beautiful to behold, but the surface mount is even more striking when it’s illuminated. The LED array produces a wide flood beam angle that gives the appearance of traditional recessed lighting. When lit, the DRD5S becomes nearly indistinguishable from a high-end recessed downlight.

The DRD5S Series is an engineering design achievement. The result of innovation, drive, and ingenuity. It’s another example of how DMF continues to push the boundaries of lighting design.

PRODUCTS is a news site and quarterly magazine that brings the latest in building product and material news to residential builders, architects, and remodelers.

Recently, the site featured a two-part series on the industry labor shortage. The second part of the series features 19 products, including the DRD5S, that can reduce installation times. Below is an excerpt from the article:

19 EFFICIENT PRODUCTS TO EASE THE SKILLED LABOR SHORTAGE

By Amanda Hermans

The U.S. construction industry is undeniably experiencing an acute shortage of skilled labor, but manufacturers are developing products to help professionals maximize the time and workers they have.

Home Innovations Research Labs recently outlined ways in which building product manufacturers can help ease the labor stress on residential construction professionals through smart product design. The suggestions include reducing the skill needed to install products, combining complementary products into a single unit, and creating products that can be installed by less people.

From factory-produced prefab building components to tools that work faster for longer, there are already solutions in a number of product categories that can help builders and contractors cut down on the hours needed to complete a project. Many product manufacturers are looking for ways to make processes more efficient, by packaging products in ready-to-install kits or rethinking product design specifically for retrofits.

One thing is certain, manufacturers will have to find ways to solve the labor shortage on their own. Whether by proactive choice or as a survival necessity, residential construction professionals across the country will have to adapt to do more with less. Incorporating a few of the efficient products below (or the countless time-saving solutions that are not listed) just might be the place to start.

18. DRD5S

The DRD5S is a new take on recessed lighting, installing with just two inches of plenum space when paired with the company’s SurfaceFrame junction box. It is also compatible with most metallic octagonal and non-metallic round junction boxes. The light requires a mounting bracket and two screws, and then easily snaps into place, the company says. The 90+ CRI LED comes in round or square units and extends just 0.6 inches beyond the ceiling.
